Following is a synopsis of an interview with
the artist.
<<What schooling have you had?
Besides the standard arts coursework, I studied
architecture for over a year in order to learn
drawing techniques of very detailed structures.
The correct mix of complex colors and perspectives
is necessary to carry a works' allure. I had
two very influential teachers, Dawn Gavin and
Taduesz Lapinski. Dawn pushed me beyond normal
experience in learning to search for subject
matter. Taduesz stressed techniques, especially
watercolor. Shading of complex natural textures
is especially difficult in watercolor medium
and involves acute sensibility to mixing and
brushing gradients of colors such as the representation
of the dog Toasts' coat shown in a detail elsewhere
on this site.
<<Have you any commissions?
For the business consulting company Hobbits
Dance, I was responsible for creating their
logos as well as some of their clients' and
learned how to interview for the underlying
ideas to be conveyed by a good logo. My latest
commission for a memorial of a pet cat was interesting
as the animal had an extremely flat head, and
all I could think about was how to avoid drawing
and casting it to not resemble that old villian
in Dick Tracy, 'Flathead'.
